baumann + baumann

barbara baumann, born in 1951, began to study history of art at the university of stuttgart before she changed the subject to visual communication at the hochschule für gestaltung schwäbisch gmünd.

gerd baumann, born in 1950 into a family with a long tradition of patisserie completed an apprenticeship as a patissier, in order to succed the parent's company, before he started his studies at the hochschule für gestaltung schwäbisch gmünd.

having completed their studies with the diploma in 1977 and briefly stayed in berlin, both returned to the south german town close to stuttgart to establish the design studio of baumann + baumann in 1978.

both partners and their team develop comprehensive corporate design
and communication concepts for companies, institutions and communities, for exhibitions and trade fairs, for orientation and information systems. they design books and posters as well as digital developments for websites and presentation templates.

 

well-known is their work for the german bundestag in bonn, for the great court of the british museum in london, for international companies such as daimler, siemens, wmf, bulthaup and messe münchen. but many smaller campaigns and cultural or social institutions also bear the stamp of their design.

barbara and gerd baumann often speak on their subject domestically and abroad and held guest professorships, among them at the hochschule der künste bremen, the kunsthochschule berlin-weissensee, the free university of bolzano, the kyoto university of art & design and the icograda world congress nagoya. for several years they held yearly workshops at the musashino art university in tokyo.

baumann + baumann have enjoyed a number of extensive publications in magazines and books and have been continuously awarded numerous national and international prizes throughout their careers. they are also members of honor of the type directors club tokyo and members of the tdc new york.
